Our Origin Story
Over a brunch in February, three friends got on the topic of toilet troubles when one of the friends told the other two — Twipes co-founders Elle and Al — that he had blocked his toilet three times since the start of the year. The culprit? Supposedly “flushable” wet wipes that didn’t break down. This conversation inspired the pair to seek a better, more environmentally friendly alternative.
Equipped with a background in chemical and materials science, Elle dedicated nearly five years to research and development, culminating in the creation of Twipes in December 2019, with Al running business operations as CEO.
The Problem
- Buildups of fat and non-flushable wipes, called fatbergs, cost $20 million annually in New York City alone
- There are 300,000 sewer blockages in the U.K. each year
- 93% of blockages originate from wipes that don’t break down
- 90% of wet wipes contain plastic
- 11 billion wet wipes pollute our beaches each year
A Truly Flushable Solution
Twipes’ unique binders enable them to break down quickly. Our goal is to make Twipes’ technology the industry standard.
- Free from parabens, alcohol and plastics, including microplastics, which means no harm to marine life and no getting stuck in landfill
- Fully disperse within 3 hours in water or 7 days in landfill
- Made from wood pulp cellulose (the same as recycled paper products)
- 100% gone during a standard waste water treatment cycle
